SETTLEMENT STUDY

Mirya, Ratnagiri

The location for this particular settlement study was a small village along the coastline of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra known as Mirya.

Fishing was considered as a major occupation in Mirya until a few decades ago. With a population of around 2000, people there are involved in private businesses of mangoes, cashews, Choti methi, etc. Some still practice fishing there.

To study the village thoroughly, we divided ourselves into 8 groups, each studying different aspects of the village, such as housing, economy, cultural objects, mapping, construction, etc.

My group was concerned about finding cultural objects in the village. The boats along the White Sea beach were no longer in use due to the decrease in fishing activity. I studied one of the boats along the beach, looking at its built form, and construction as well as the importance it once held for the fishermen there.
